PALEMBANG (June 28, 2007) – Indonesian captain Ponaryo Astaman will undergo a final test against Liberia this Saturday to assess his level of competitiveness for the Asian Cup 2007 which kicks off next month.
Ponaryo (left in pic), who was stretchered out in Indonesia’s 2-1 win over Jamaica a week ago, is undergoing rehabilitation at the moment and where the match against Liberia will be the pivotal point for head coach Ivan Kolev to decide on his inclusion. For the Asian Cup, Indonesia have been placed in Group D against Bahrain, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. But while the future of Ponaryo in the Asian Cup remains uncertain, another midfielder Rahmat Rivai has confirmed his non-participation for Asia’s biggest football extravaganza. It would seem that Rahmat’s left meniscus problem –sustained during one of Indonesia’s earlier friendly matches – will not recover anytime soon and where it is likely that surgery will be required. The Indonesian national team will play their last international friendly against Liberia this Saturday at the Stadium Jakabaring in Palembang before returning to Jakarta on July 5. They will open their campaign against Bahrain five days later at the official venue of the Stadium Gelora Bung Karno. |
