MANILA (1 Oct 2012) – The Philippines national team got their preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup on the right note when they captured the Peace Cup this week.
The AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 semi-finalists wrapped up the title with a convincing 3-1 win over Chinese Taipei in the final round robin tie for them to rake in the full nine points from three matches.
The Philippines had begun their Peace Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Guam before thrashing Macau 5-0 in their second match.
And this time round, it was to be Denis Wolf who would play a pivotal role when he opened account in the 10th minute. Skipper Chieffy Caligdong then took advantage of a poor clearance by Chinese Taipei for the second goal in the 35th minute.
The Philippines finished the first half with a three-goal advantage when OJ Porteria found the back of the net on 43 minutes.
Chinese Taipei scored their only goal of the game in the 52nd minute off Chang Han.
The Peace Cup victory for the Philippines was the country’s first international football tournament in 99 years.
