BANGKOK (9 July 2009) – A late strike from Phichitpong Cheuichiew seven minutes to the end saved the blushes for the Thailand national team as they overcame Thai Premier League club side Muang Thong United 3-2 in a tune-up match at the Thunderdome Stadium.
The match served as a preparation for the Peter Reid-led side in anticipation for the game against Liverpool at the Rajamangala Stadium on 22 July. But it was Muang Thong who stole the early limelight when new signing Ronnachai Rangsiyo headed home the lead on ten minutes as national defender Suree Sukha then equalised for the national side midway through the first half. Thailand took a 2-1 lead in the second half from a Panupong Wongsa free-kick only for the hosts to get an equaliser from Piyachart Tamaphan. And with just seven minutes left on the clock, Phichitpong saved the day for Thailand with a fabulous header. “We started off slowly and could have conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes,” quipped Reid after the game. “but it was good for us to play a warm-up match against a top Thai league side.” Thailand will take on Pakistan on 14 and 18 July before the match against Liverpool. |
