JAKARTA (10 June 2011) – Persipura Jayapura confirmed their second Indonesia Super League (ISL) crown in three season following their 2-1 win over Persisam Samarinda this week.
With three games yet to play, Persipura have garnered 55 points from 25 matches played – nine points ahead of second-placed and defending champions Arema Indonesia, who incidentally have played a match more.
Persipura won their first title in the ISL in the inaugural season in 2004-2005 before winning the second crown in the 2008-2009 season.
Striker Titus Bonai was the hero for the Back Pearls when he nailed the winner in the 70th minute following earlier goals from Fandi Mochtar (22nd minute for Persisam) and Ortizan Solossa (34th minute for Persipura).
“Persisam didn’t play bad, but we were better in converting our chances into goals. We achieved our target and now we’re shifting our focus on the AFC Cup,” said Jacksen Tiago, the chief coach of Persipura.
Persipura’s remaining matches are against bottom-placed Bontang FC (11 June 2011), Pelita Jaya (16 June 2011) and Semen Padang (19 June 2011).
In the meantime Agum Gumelar, the chairman of the Normalisation Committee, announced that the FA of Indonesia (PSSI) Congress on 20 June 2011 will be held in the birthplace of Indonesian football – Solo.
“We decided to hold the election in Solo because it is located in the middle of the country and it is there where Indonesian football began,” Agum said.
The PSSI were established in Solo on 19 April 1930.
“It’ll take a massive effort to organize it so we’ll need all the time we have to prepare everything,” he said. “We want to make sure everything is in order and the election will go on well.”
“I hope all PSSI members will work together to make this election a success so Indonesia won’t be suspended.”
