SYDNEY (23 Sept 2019) – It was not the best of outing for ASEAN teams in the AFC U16 qualifiers this time round where only two teams out of 12 from the region made the cut for the Bahraini meet set for 2020.
The best 11 group winners were joined by the four best second-placed teams – Yemen, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Oman – with the 16th spot reserved for the host country.
The two teams from ASEAN who have made the cut are Australia – the winning team from Group H ahead of hosts Vietnam – and Indonesia from Group G – one of the best second placed teams.
Australia finished with a perfect record with 12 points from four matches played that saw them overcame hosts Vietnam, Timor Leste, Mongolia and Macau in Group H.
In the meantime, Indonesia finished their Group G qualifiers behind China on goal difference in the group that had Philippines, Brunei DS and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Defending champions Japan, who have won the title three times, led the group winners as they finished top of Group J – ahead of AFF U15 champions Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia.
