DILI (20 July 2012) – The AFC Competitions Committee have selected Oman ahead of Thailand to host the inaugural AFC Under-22 Championship 2013 finals.
Oman and Thailand were bidding to host the U22 finals and the committee, under the chairmanship of UAE’s Yousuf Al Serkal, opted for the West Asian country, which will be hosting a centralised AFC competition for the first time.
The Omanis had already qualified for the AFC U22 finals as the best third-placed team. Since, Oman now get a direct slot by virtue of being the hosts of the competition, the best third-placed team slot from all the qualifying groups will now be given to Yemen.
The AFC Competitions Committee also decided to award the AFC President’s Cup 2012 finals to Tajikistan’s Istiklol FC – ahead of Dordoi Dyanamo of Kyrgyzstan and Phnom Penh Crown FC of Cambodia.
