SINGAPORE (1 Dec 2009) – Terry Pathmanathan, the head coach of the Singapore national Under-23 side has warned his players against complacency when the SEA Games kick off in Laos next week.
Singapore have been placed in Group B of the biennial championship against Indonesia, Myanmar and hosts Laos. Group A are defending champions Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Timor Leste and Cambodia. “The players cannot be too complacent and overconfident because of the draw. It is very important for the players to be focused and work extremely hard to get the desired results,” said Terry. And while Group B might seem to be a little easier of the two groups and where they will be playing a match less, Terry however believes that the team will have the work cut out for them. “On paper we might look like the stronger team compared with the others in the group. We cannot take things lightly. Laos are the host nation and they are capable of creating a surprise with their fans behind them,” added Terry. “Myanmar won the silver medal two years ago and we can never under estimate Indonesia as they are a traditionally strong team.” Singapore will open their campaign against 2007 silver medallists Myanmar on 7 December 2009.
