MELBOURNE (6 Sept 2017) – Goals from Tomi Juric and Mathew Leckie have kept Australia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup hopes alive after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Thailand at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Tuesday night.
Australia dominated the match from the first blow of the whistle and were unlucky not to take a lead into half time after Aaron Mooy and Tim Cahill both had shots hitting the woodwork.
Tom Rogic also saw a shot cannon off the post in the 68th minute, but just a minute later Australia took the lead when a perfect cross from Aaron Mooy was headed home by Juric.
The stadium was silenced just over 10 minutes from full time when Pokklaw Anan pulled the visitors level, but Mathew Leckie’s goal four minutes latervsecured all three points for the Socceroos.
Australia must now wait for the result of the match between Saudi Arabia and Japan in Jeddah to find out their 2018 FIFA World Cup fate.
