SINGAPORE (27 July 2009) – Liverpool scored their first win of their pre-season preparation when they thrashed Singapore 5-0 at the National Stadium.
The Premier League runners-up had earlier drawn 0-0 against St Gallen of Switzerland, a 1-0 loss to Rapid Vienna and then a 1-1 draw against Thailand a few days earlier. But this time round, there were no hesitancy to their game with Andriy Voronin putting the Reds in front in the 45th minute following a deflected shot from 25metres out. In the 54th minute of play, Albert Riera then gave Liverpool a 2-0 advantage when he chested down a cross from Mascherano before blasting it in past Hasan Sunny from close-range. A double from Krisztian Nemeth (73rd and 83rd minute) and then another from Fernando Torres completed Liverpool’s tour of the Far East on a resounding note – much to the satisfaction of their legion of fans. Rafa Benitez took the chance to partner young centre-back Mikel San Jose with Jamie Carragher and handed Daniel Agger a role at left-back. Benitez made three changes during the interval, with Peter Gulacsi, Emiliano Insua and Riera replacing Cavalieri, Mikel San Jose and Babel before making wholesale changes at the hour mark. |
