NAKHON RATHCHASIMA (Dec 12, 2007) – Myanmar denied the form book to make the final of the men’s football event here at the SEA Games when they beat Vietnam 3-1 on penalties to play against Thailand for the gold tomorrow evening at the 80th Anniversary Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima.
While the Thais had an easier 3-0 win over Singapore in the other semi-final tie, the Myanmar side were made to struggle for a scoreless draw at the end of regulation against a Vietnam team which had emerged as the runners-up at the last two SEA Games in Vietnam in 2003 and then in the Philippines in 2005. But in the shootout, Myanmar were more composed as Zaw Htet Aung, Yazar Win Thein and Moe Win converted their chances for a place in the final this year. Vietnam’s only penalty conversion came off striker Le Conh Vinh while Nguyen Vu Phong, Mai Xuen Hop and Mo Thanh Long missed. In the meantime, Thailand came away with an easy 3-0 win over Singapore after taking a two-goal lead at the break with goals off Wuttichai Tatong in the 22nd minute and Anon Sangsanol in the 45th minute. Prat Samakrat then made sure of the win for the Thais with the third and final goal in the 77th minute. |
