YANGON (4 July 2012) – Myanmar confirmed their place in the final round of the AFC Under-22 Asian Cup when they beat Malaysia in the pinnacle qualifying game of Group G last night at the Youth Training Centre last night.
Needing just to pick up one point from their last game in the group, Myanmar showed that they are worthy of a place in the final round when they pulled out all the stops to beat Malaysia 2-1 in front of well over 28,000 fans.
Two goals from Kaung Si Thu in the 34th and 53rd minute put Myanmar well on the way as the Malaysians then gained a consolation goal off a Rozaimi Abdul Rahman’s penalty late in the game.
With the win, Myanmar joined Korea Republic – who beat Vietnam 2-0 – to advance to the next round.
The two best teams from the seven groups, the best third-placed team and the hosts will be pitted in the inaugural edition of the championship which will serve as the Asian qualifiers for the Olympic Football Tournaments. The finals will be played on 11-26 January 2014.
