YANGON (4 Aug 2008) – Myanmar booked their place in the semi-finals of the AFC Challenge Cup 2008 when they beat Sri Lanka 3-1 in the second game of Group B at the Gachibowli Stadium.
Following a scoreless first half, Myanmar opened account in the 46th minute off captain Soe Myat Min, Yan Paing (70th) and Si Thu Win (85th) for the full points. Kasun Jayasuriya scored the only goal for Sri Lanka in the 50th minute. “It was a great win and the players put on a good performance,” said Marcos Falopa, the head coach for Myanmar. “The players showed good character in the game and they had an impressive showing. The goal that we conceded could have affected us negatively but the players knew how to make a good comeback and scored two more goals.” Myanmar started very much in the same vein as they had done previously in their 3-0 demolition of Nepal – slow build up only to be let down by several poor finishing. But the goal just a minute after the restart animated Myanmar although Sri Lanka rallied for the equaliser. Only further goals from Yan Paing and Thu Win delivered Myanmar the full points as they now look to the match against DPR Korea to decide the group winner. |
