YANGON (30 Oct 2008) – The Myanmar All-Star team held the Associacao Missao Esperanca (AME) football team from Brazil to a 1-1 draw in the second friendly match that was played at the Aung San Stadium.
The fund-raising charity match was organised for the victims of cyclone Nargis with the first game ending in a 4-0 win for the Brazilian visitors a few days earlier. Brazilian Paulo Sergio opened the scoring for the Brazilian AME team in the 33rd minute before Zaw Htaike equalized for Myanmar in the 67th minute for the final 1-1 scoreline. The Brazilian AME soccer team has an average age of 36-years-old with the youngest player being 25 and the oldest 47. After the charity match, AME captain Paulo Sergio said that the team were very happy for being granted the chance to play the fund-raising charity football match where the aim was to raise fund to rebuild schools in cyclone-destroyed delta area in Myanmar. Apart from the matches against Myanmar, the AME team will also play one match against the Vietnamese U-23 team and two games with the Malaysian selection team. All the proceedings of the six charity soccer matches will go to the funds for the rebuilding of schools in Myanmar. According to the Department of Basic Education-1 under the Ministry of Education, out of a total of 1,785 primary, middle and high schools destroyed in the cyclone-hard-hit Ayeyawaddy delta region, 694 have been or are being repaired, leaving 1,091 schools yet to be done for reopening. |
