NAKHON RATCHASIMA (Dec 8, 2007) – Myanmar and Singapore made the semi-finals of the SEA Games men’s football tournament in contrasting fashion following the final round of group matches this evening.
With the advantage of going into their final Group A on a better note than Indonesia, the Myanmarese made sure of their place in the semi-finals this year when they beat Cambodia 6-2 at the Municipality Stadium. Both Si Thu Win (19th and 60th minute) and Si Thu Than (45th and 90th) nailed a brace each before Yazzar Win Thein and Pai Soe added further goals in the 36th and 58th minute respectively. Cambodia’s two goals in the match came off Teab Vathanak in the 20th minute and Kouch Sokumpheak in the 47th minute. In the meantime, Singapore also advanced through to the next round of the competition despite the one point earned against Malaysia in their final Group B match. Agu Casimir was the toast for the Singapore side when his goal ten minutes to the end cancelled out Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal’s earlier strike in the 71st minute to halt the progress of the Malaysians. The disappointment was also felt by 2005 semi-finalists Indonesia when they were denied a place in the last four by a confident Thai side which beat them 2-1 at the Anniversary Stadium. Two goals from Teerathep Winothai (15th minute) and Anon Sangsanol (45th minute) were enough to give the Thais the three points even though Indonesia did pull a goal back off Jajang Mulyana in the 17th minute. On the other hand, Vietnam confirmed their place in the semi-finals of the meet with a 2-1 win over Laos at the Municipality Stadium. But it was Laos who took the game to their better-known counterparts when Following from the final group matches, the semi-final games will be played on Dec 11 with Vietnam taking on Myanmar while defending champions Thailand will host Singapore. |
