MANDALAY (16 March 2015) – Myanmar eased into the Second Round of qualifiers for the 2016 Olympics with a comfortable 7-0 triumph over India last night.
The Group A hosts took an eighth-lead at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium when midfielder Khin Moe Wai netted her fifth goal of the qualifiers following her four-goal haul in Myanmar’s 16-0 win over Sri Lanka in last Wednesday’s opener before further strikes from Khin Marlar Tun (15th), Naw Ar Lo Wer Phaw (21st) and Yee Yee Oo (28th), scorer of Myanmar’s only goal during their 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign, had the home side 4-0 up at the interval.
Khin Marlar Tun and Yee Yee Oo completed their doubles with goals in the 61st and 77th minutes respectively before substitute Win Theingi Tun, a replacement for goal scorer Naw Ar Lo Wer Phaw on the hour mark, sealed the win two minutes into stoppage time.
Myanmar advance to Round 2, where they join Thailand, Vietnam and the two other group winners from the first round, with a place in the final round going to the side that finishes top of the five-team table.
The top-two sides from the Qualification Final Round – which features reigning Asian champions Japan, 2014 FC Asian Cup runners-up Australia, DPR Korea, China, and Korea Republic – will fly the Asian flag at the women’s football tournament of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
