BANGKOK (21 Feb 2010) – Defending Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United won the season-opening King’s Trophy with a 2-0 win over Thai Port which was marred by a pitch invasion that resulted in injuries to several fans.
The match, which was played before a representative of the Thai King at the Supachalasai Stadium, was between Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United and FA Cup winners Thai Port. Following a scoreless draw in the first half, Muang Thong went ahead in the 66th minute after new signing Kone Mohamed of Ivory Coast found the net. With Muang Thong goalkeeper Kawin Thamasatchanan in good form, there was really no danger for Thai Port to draw level. And ten minutes to the end, Muang Thong nailed their second goal when Dagno Siaka headed home from close range to put the game beyond the reach of their opponent. It was at this time that several people got injured after clashes triggered by Port supporters who threw firecrackers and objects on to the pitch.
