YANGON (10 Jan 2012) – The Myanmar National League (MNL) will be introducing a promotion-relegation system by 2014 when they expand the current singular league to a two-tier implement.
There are currently 14 teams in the MNL 2012 following the addition of Chin United FC and Mawrawadi FC. U Win Thu Moe, the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) competition director said that the bottom two teams at the end of the current season will be relegated to the yet-to-be-formed second division pro league in 2013.
The 2nd division is expected to kick-off in 2013 and which will comprise of ten teams – eight teams will be promoted from the lower amateur league. There will be 20 teams playing in the amateur league this year.
“A professional league must have promotion and relegation. As we are now forming a professional league, we must adopt a two-tiered system,” added U Win Thu Moe.
“Before we couldn’t establish this system as we only had a few football clubs but now we can with the increasing numbers of clubs.”
