SYDNEY (23 June 2017) – Mark Milligan’s second half penalty earned Australia a 1-1 draw with Cameroon on Thursday to keep alive their feint hopes of progressing to the FIFA Confederations Cup semi-finals.
ustralia began the game brightly, but it was Cameroon who, after eventually establishing a foothold in the game, went ahead after Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa stole in to loft the ball over Socceroos goalkeeper Maty Ryan on the stroke of half-time.
Cameroon should have been two to the good but were left ruing Vincent Aboubakar’s miss when Australia captain Mark Milligan slotted home from the penalty spot after the rampaging Alex Gersbach had been brought down by Ernest Mabouka.
With neither side able to find a winner in the remaining 30 minutes, the draw leaves Australia still in with a chance of sealing a top-two finish and a place in the last four.
