BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (March 8, 2007) – Malaysia made the semi-finals of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy when they overcame Singapore 2-0 in their final Group A match this afternoon at the Berakas Sports Complex.
Needing a win to make up for the 4-1 loss to Thailand in their second match, Malaysia struck in each half of the tie against the young Lions for them to chalk their first victory of the competition and a place in the last four. Mohd Akmal Mohd Noor and Ahmad Aminuddin were the heroes for Malaysia with goals in the 39th and 47th minute where now they will face Myanmar in the semi-finals of the competition in two days. IN THE MEANTIME, Vietnam’s campaign in the championship came to a crashing halt at the Berakas Track and Field Sports Complex when they went down 5-0 to Thailand. An own goal by Dinh Vu Han Phong as early as the third minute was not the best of start but when Wisoot Bunpeng converted a penalty for Thailand two minutes later, the match was already beyond contention. The defending champion turned on the style for Choklap Nilsang to score a brace in the 12th and 87th minute as Chainarong Tatong contributed the fifth goal in the 78th minute. The semi-finals of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy will be played at the main venue of the Stadium Negara Hassanal Bolkiah with Thailand taking on Cambodia in the first game at 8pm before Myanmar entertain Malaysia in the second tie of the evening at 10pm.
