KUALA LUMPUR (March 16, 2007) – The best of youth club football will be in Malaysia this year when they play host to the Champions Youth Cup Malaysia 2007 from August 5-19.
At the official announcement ceremony, it was made known that fourteen of the world’s greatest football clubs will play in a single tournament and where they will include among others Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus, Flamengo, Arsenal and Barcelona. The tournament which is for Under-19 players and where Malaysia and Qatar will each field a team is supported by the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Tourism and the FA of Malaysia (FAM). “A two weeks football festival…the world’s greatest clubs, the world’s finest young players and 34 matches across seven venues,” said Jonatan Price, chairman of UK-based Gifted Group Limited. “The tournament shows that Malaysia matters to the clubs – Manchester United in Malaysia for weeks not days, games across the country as well as Kuala Lumpur, every club accompanied by a great from the past to act as Club Ambassador and each one of them committed to participate in the community events that will embrace over 3,000 young children.” Four groups of four teams will play round robin matches in Alor Setar, Kuantan, Melaka and Kuching with the knockout stages held in Kuala Lumpur and the final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Sunday, Aug 19. The tournament draw will take place in Malaysia on April 19.
