SINGAPORE (11 August 2010) – As part of their preparations for the Asian Games and also the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 later this year, Singapore will be taking on Thailand at the Yamaha Stadium in Bangkok later tonight.
Kick-off for the match is at 6pm local time. With the S-League taking a three week break due to the Youth Olympic Games, chief coach Radojko Avramovic sees this as an excellent opportunity for the players to gather some international experience. “This is a good game for us to have as Thailand will be using their strongest team against us. We have not had many games, with the last being against Burnley but in that game, I used most of the Under 23 players,” said Avramovic. With the likes of Lionel Lewis, Qiu Li and Ismail Yunos adding to the Lions’ injury list, the uncapped trio of Shahdan Sulaiman, Zulfahmi Arifin and Izwan Mahbud have been rewarded for their fine form in the S-League this season. Baihakki Khaizan and Fahrudin Mustafic, who both turn out for Indonesian side Persija, look to start the match as Home United’s Shahril Ishak captains the side. Avramovic will also be giving SAFFC’s duo of John Wilkinson and Daniel Bennett a run out in the second half, where the latter has not made much of impact this season due to injury. “I want to give some of the older players a chance against Thailand as I am eager to see what they can offer, added Avramovic. The Lions will return to Singapore on 12 August, before leaving for Serbia on 14 August for a two-week long training tour, where they will play three matches against a Serbia XI and Serbian First Division Clubs FK Vojvodina Novi Sad and FK Jagodina.
