HO CHI MINH CITY (26 Oct 2009) – Former Asean champions Singapore held the current Asean kingpins Vietnam 2-2 to make sure that they win the 2009 HCM City International Football Tournament at the Thong Nhat Stadium.
With two wins out of two, the Lions only needed a draw to win the tournament outright following Vietnam’s 2-0 defeat to the Korean University Selection Team in their second match. But it was the hosts who drew first blood just 18 minutes into the game when Nguyen Quang Hai was put through before putting the ball beyond the reach of Lionel Lewis. Aleksandar Duric then levelled the score for Singapore eight minutes later off a cross from Rosman Sulaiman. The score at the half was 1-1. Just six minutes into the second half, Fazrul Nawaz gave the Lions the lead for the first time in the game with a shot from close. And just when it seemed that Singapore would win the tie, Lionel con conceded a penalty with six minutes left on the clock. Vu Nhu Thanh made sure from the spot although it was not enough to deny Singapore the top prize of USD20,000 prize money. Vietnam had to settle for third in the tournament when Korean University took the second spot following their incredible 8-6 win over Turkmenistan. The second spot comes with a USD10,000 prize while third-placed Vietnam took back USD5,000. In the meantime, the Vietnam women’s team (pix) beat Thailand 2-0 to win the International Women’s Football Tournament TKV 2009 in Cua Ong Stadium. Second was Thailand while Laos finished third in the competition. The most valuable player award went to Thailand’s Seesraum Junpen while the top striker award went to Ngoc Cham from Vietnam, who scored four goals. Vietnam also took the award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament. |
