SINGAPORE (20 Nov 2019) – Both Singapore and Myanmar breathed life back to their campaign in the second round qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 2022 when they each picked up the full points.
On the sixth matchday of the qualifiers that were played across the region, Singapore picked up their second full points from five matches when they beat Yemen 2-1 at the Sheikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Stadium in Bahrain.
The Lions were on target through Ikhsan Fandi in the 19th minute and then Hafiz Nor in the 52nd minute as Yemen pulled in the late goal off Nasser Al-Ghawashi five minutes to the end.
After five matches in Group D, Singapore are on third with seven points behind leaders Uzbekistan and second-placed Saudi Arab
On the other hand, Myanmar made it back to back wins in Group F when they edged Mongolia 1-0 at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium in Mandalay (above).
The win was a follow up from their 4-3 victory under reappointed head coach Antoine Hey.
And last night, a quick early goal from Hlaing Bo Bo was all that separated the two sides.
In the meantime in Group G, ASEAN champions Vietnam continued to lead the standings despite their scoreless draw against Thailand at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.
The one point allowed Vietnam to stay top of the group with 11 points from five matches as Thailand slipped down to third with eight points.
On second is Malaysia who beat Indonesia 2-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil to amass nine points from the same number of matches.
Striker Safawi Rasid was on target twice in the 30th and 73rd minute.
Elsewhere, the Philippines fell to a 1-0 loss to Syria in a Group A tie that was played at the Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in the United Arad Emirates.
The only goal in the game came in the 23rd minute through Ward Salama.
Cambodia also fell on the road when they succumbed to a 2-0 loss to Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium.
James Ha was on target after 20 minutes as Roberto Orlando Junior then added the second goal six minutes to the end.
For Cambodia, they also had to play with a man short from the 78th minute onwards when Souey Visal was red-carded.
The seventh matchday of the qualifiers will only take place next year on 26 March 2020.
