BANGKOK (2 August 2010) – Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said that the Thai players should make it a point to learn from their playing experience against Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
Atletico overcame a stubborn Thai Premier League All-Stars side 3-0 in a friendly that was played on Sunday. Spanish ambassador Ignacio Sagaz Temprano, Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin and their players had paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at Government House before their departure back to Madrid. Abhisit told them that this was a “golden year” for Spanish football as their national side won their first World Cup and Atletico Madrid won the Europa League. He said he believes the visit by the Spanish club would help give foreigners confidence that Thailand is a safe place. Abhisit said he was disappointed that he could not go to watch the game at Rajamangala Stadium and believed that the Thai players could gain many things from the visit by Atletico. “The Thai players should learn from Atletico’s beautiful passing and team work. We should learn from their techniques and playing style,” he said. Marin said the trip was useful for his team in their preparations for the new season and their European Super Cup match against Champions League winners Inter Milan on 27 August. |
