BANGKOK (28 August 2008) – Newcomers Laos provided the surprise on the second day of the AFF Futsal Championship 2008 when they beat tournament regular Vietnam 5-2 as Indonesia thumped Philippines 7-0 here at the Nimibutr Stadium.
Laos, who almost scored an upset against Malaysia yesterday, were quicker off the block as they scored their first goal off captain Valasine Dalaphone in the seventh minute for Vietnam to reply two minutes later from Truong Quoc Tuan. As Laos added their second goal on 14th minute from Anakone Sayakone, they did not look back after the break when they add further goals from Phetsamay Thongmany (23rd minute), Etdy Douangmatphon (35th) and Phonepaseuth Sysoutham (39th) for their first three points of the competition. Vietnam’s second goal of the match came off Nguyen Quang Minh in the 38th minute. “It was a good team effort and we have made significant progress from the match yesterday. We now look forward to playing against Brunei tomorrow,” said Viengkeo Phommakaxay, the head coach for Laos. In the meantime, Indonesia breezed through Philippines 7-0 in the second match of Group A. The Philippines were a bit off colour as compared to their first game against Thailand yesterday when they conceded an own goal off Ariel Zerrudo in the fourth minute before Indonesia added their second of the afternoon Deny Handoyo two minutes later. Indonesia then turned on the charm after the break to slam home five more goals from Sukma Nagara in the 25th minute, Fachry Assegaf (28th minute), Topas Pamungkas (29th) and Achmad Syaibani (33rd and 35th). “We made some mistakes in the first where the players were a little tense. But we showed today that we can play good Futsal,” added Justinus Lhaksana, the head coach for Indonesia.
