YANGON (16 Nov 2008) – An opportune second-half strike from Aung Kyaw Moe gives hosts Myanmar a well-deserved 2-1 win Indonesia for them to finish at the top of Group A in the Grand Royal Challange Cup 2008 last night at the Thuwanna Youth Training Centre Stadium.
In the crucial last group tie to decide the group winner, it was Indonesia who drew first blood when Ismed Sofyan slammed home the lead in a front of a well-attended crowd in the 35th minute. But the joy did not last long for Indonesia when just five minutes later, Yan Paing scored the equaliser for both teams to be on level terms at the break. The second-half would prove to be pivotal as both teams played a more compact game and did not allow for much attacking option. However, just when things seem to be heading for a deadlock, Kyaw Moe gave the Myanmar faithful a reason to cheer with the winning goal in the 75th minute. With the win, Myanmar have collected four points while Indonesia have three points. Bangladesh have only one point following their scoreless draw against Myanmar and their 2-0 loss to Indonesia. Myanmar and Indonesia’s opponents in the semi-finals will only be known later tonight after the last match in Group B between Ulsan Hyundai and Vietnam. Malaysia have already qualified for the semi-finals following their 3-0 win over Vietnam and 1-1 draw against Ulsan Hyundai. |
