KUALA LUMPUR (18 August 2017) – Malaysia’s hope of at least a medal in women’s football were dashed when they fell to their second straight defeat after Myanmar thrashed them 5-0 at UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam.
Myanmar have proved a level too far for the hosts as they forced the Malaysians to camp in their own half for most of the first half.
The Malaysians, however, were fortunate to keep the marauding 2015 bronze medalists at bay after a toothless display with a 0-0 scoreline midway.
Two minutes after the break, the Malaysian defensive wall caved in when a shot was deflected in by national defender Nur Athinah Farhanah Zamri.
Thanks to a cross from midfielder Naw Arlo Wer Phaw, a well connected header by striker Win Theingi Tun had given the Myanmar side the second goal in the 63rd minute.
It was all over when striker Khin Moe Wai slapped in the third goal to keep their lead out in the 73rd minute.
Myanmar continued on to steamroll the Malaysian defense when striker Win Theingi Tun (77th) and Khin Moe Wai (79th) collected the remainder.
