PHNOM PENH (May 19, 2007) – Khemara Keila FC took the crown in the Samdech Hun Sen Cup 2007 when they beat Naga Corp FC 4-2 in a pulsating final of the championship which was played at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
The score at the end of regulation was 1-1 with Chan Chhaya scoring for Khemara as early as the 15th minute before Pich Sina found the equaliser for Naga Corp FC in the 75th minute in front of a sell-out crowd. The additional time failed to produce the winner and where it took the dreaded penalty shootout for Khemara to win the title when Ung Korn Yanith, Kouch Sokumpheak, Seng Narath and Loch Ratha converted the penalties. Naga Corp FC penalties were scored by Neang Chenla and Lam Tiny while Pich Sina and Kim Chan Bunrith failed to score from the spot. IN THE MEANTIME, Phnom Penh Empire FC made up for their disappointment of being bundled out of the semi-final of the tournament when they beat Build Bright University FC 4-1 to take third place. Phnom Penh Empire FC was quick on the draw to take a 2-0 lead at the break with goals coming off Chin Chum in the 15th minute and Hok Sochivorn five minutes later. Hok then completed his hat-trick with two more goals in the second half in the 48th and 68th minute in spite of the gallant effort of Build Bright University FC to rally a late reply off Huot Seyha in the 70th minute. The closing ceremony of the Samdech Hun Sen Cup 2007 was graced by His Excellency Sok An, the vice Prime Minister of Cambodia and who is also the Minister in charge of the Council Ministries. Also in attendance was Tengku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Rithauddeen Tengku Ismail, the president of the Asean Football Federation (AFF), high ranking government officials from Cambodia, ambassadors as well as students and fans which number close to 50, 000 spectators.
