HANOI (9 May 2014) – Takeshi Okada, who led Japan to the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and also in 2010, is leading the shortlist to be the new coach of Vietnam
The former defender for Furukawa Electric and also the Japan national side in the 80s, was introduced by the Japan FA (JFA) after the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) for recommendations.
Okada will take over the position left vacant by Hoang Van Phuc who resigned earlier this year.
After coaching Japan in 1997 to 1998, the Osaka-born Okada, went on to coach J-League side Consadole Sapporo (1999–2001), Yokohama F. Marinos (2003–2006) and back to the Japanese national side for a second stint (2007–2010).
He went on to sign for Chinese Super League side Hangzhou Greentown for two seasons (2012–2013) before resigning at the end of last year.
