JAKARTA (9 May 2010) – The Jakarta Selection team improved to fifth from eighth in the Under-14 Tokyo International Youth Tournament 2010 which ended at the Komazawa Olympic Park last week.
Apart from improving their overall position, the Indonesian youth side also won the Fair Play Award. The tournament, which is being held to celebrate the ‘twin’ cities of Tokyo, was won by Tokyo Verdy U14 who beat Corinthians U14 of Brazil with a 4-1 scoreline in the final. Apart from Jakarta, the other twin cities of Tokyo are Rome, London, Paris, Moscow, Sao Paolo, Paris, Seoul and Beijing. “Our participation in this tournament proved that PSSI (FA of Indonesia) are committed towards youth development,” said Ganesha Putera Christian, of the PSSI Youth Department. The team did not have the best of start when they conceded a 3-0 defeat in their first game against FC Cairo before beating New South Wales 2-0 – with goals from Tedi and Gilang. In their final group match, the Indonesian youth side fell two quick goals from FC Tokyo Fukagawa as they were left to play in the ranking matches. Failing to make the semi-finals, Indonesia edged out FC Seoul 5-4 on penalties after the scoreless draw at the end of regulation for the chance to play in the 5th /6th classification. And their opponent is none other than FC Tokyo Fukugawa although this time round, the Indonesian youth side emerged 2-0 winners – with goals from Helmi Madilla and Tedi. |
