JAKARTA (19 July 2009) – The recent bombing which took place in Jakarta has far severe repercussion than the cancellation of the visit by Manchester United – it has put Indonesia’s World Cup dream in jeopardy.
Indonesia are serious about being hosts for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and while it is still some years ahead, it is believed that the Jakarta bombing of the Marriot and Ritz Carlton hotels has serious implications of the country’s ability to be hosts. Nurdin Halid, the president of the FA of Indonesia (PSSI), who was accompanied by Nugraha Besoes, the general secretary and treasurer Hamka Yandhu, expressed his disappointment at a press conference. “We are deeply saddened with this incident and we criticise it strongly as it has affected the dream of a nation,” said Nurdin. “It has prevented the arrival of a strong team to Indonesia and secondly, it has also put into jeopardy our desire to be hosts of the World Cup in 2022. “We tried to have Manchester United to change their mind but I suppose under the circumstances, there’s little that we can do. And I don’t think that it is appropriate for us to have the game against Indonesia in Malaysia.” |
