JAKARTA (Oct 27, 2007) – It was not exactly a rousing performance but hosts Indonesia did get a positive start to their campaign in Group F of the AFC Under-16 qualifiers when they beat Hong Kong 1-0 at the Stadion Lebak Bulus in Jakarta last night.
Following a first half deadlock, Alan Martha gave the home team the lead and the only goal of the game in the 50th minute. But Indonesia had only themselves to blame for being able to carve out just the one goal throughout the exchange following their failure to make good on at least eight scoring opportunities they created. In the last three minutes of play, Indonesia rocked the Hong Kong cross bar twice off Alan Martha and Rudi Setiawan to demonstrate just how frustrating an evening Indonesia had. “Generally, the players played well although I felt that the finishing could have been a lot better,” said Indonesia head coach Subangkit. “We have to work a lot harder to win against Laos so that we can pick up the second full points against a side which are known to be solid and fast. But the question will be whether the players can recover in time in these two days.” IN THE MEANTIME, Japan scored their second win of the qualifiers when they thrashed Cambodia 7-0. Kenyu Sugimoto scored five goals in the game in the first, 13th, 32nd, 77th and 88th minute while Usami Takashi and Haraguchi Takuto scored the other goals in the 30th and 75th minute respectively. “We played a lot better today than in the first game (against Laos),” said Yutaka Ikeuchi, the head coach for Japan. “But I believe that the first goal in the very first minute of play disrupted the concentration for Cambodia.” FIXTURES AND RESULTS Oct 24: JAPAN 2 LAOS 0/ VIETNAM 1 CAMBODIA 1 Oct 26: HONG KONG 0 INDONESIA 1/ CAMBODIA 0 JAPAN 7 Oct 28: Vietnam vs Hong Kong, Indonesia vs Laos Oct 30: Cambodia vs Hong Kong, Japan vs Indonesia Nov 1: Laos vs Vietnam, Hong Kong vs Japan Nov 3: Indonesia vs Vietnam, Laos vs Cambodia Nov 5: Japan vs Vietnam, Laos vs Hong Kong, Cambodia vs Indonesia GROUP F STANDINGS 1.
