JAKARTA (15 July 2012) – ASEAN neighbours Indonesia and Singapore failed to make the cut for the final round of the AFC Under-22 Asian Cup when the finished their campaign in Group E of the qualifiers on third and fourth respectively.
Only the top two teams from the group gained places into the next round and after the end of the qualifying matches in the group, Japan and Australia emerged as the best ranked teams.
But hosts Indonesia gained at least some measure of satisfaction in their last game in the group when they beat Singapore 2-0 with both goals coming off Agung Supriyanto’s penalty in the 64th minute and another brilliant solo effort six minutes later.
“I was surprised with the way they played against Singapore. It was as if they had a chance to make into the next round,” said Aji Santoso, the chief coach of the Indonesia U22 afterwards.
In the meantime, Timor Leste finished fifth after beating Macau 4-1 in their final group game.
