HANOI (5 August 2014) – The inaugural AFF Beach Soccer Championship will be held in Kuantan, Pahang in October this year.
Held in the home state of HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, AFF President, the event has attracted seven teams from the Asean region.
Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam are the countries which have confirmed their participation.
The details of the first-ever Beach Soccer tournament was revealed at the AFF Council Meeting, which was chaired by HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah in Hanoi, Vietnam this morning.
The AFF Council was held ahead of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2014 draw which will take place this afternoon.
Prior to the start of today’s meeting, the AFF Council observed a minute’s silence for the victims of MH17.
In his opening address, Sultan Haji Ahmad commented on the draw and said it would exciting to see how it plays out. “I’m anticipating an exciting draw and I would like to wish the participating teams all the best.”
HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad also mentioned that inspection visits had been carried out on the hosts and he was confident that all preparations were well under way.
He also went on to congratulate Vietnam for successfully hosting the Asian Women’s Cup and the Asian Futsal Championships. “I am sure their match organisation expertise will help in the staging of the AFF Suzuki Cup.”
“Congratulations also to Australia and Thailand for qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and to Thailand again for qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup.”
