BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (8 April 2009) – Brunei suffered a thrashing at the hands of Pakistan in the qualifying round of Group D of the AFC Challenge Cup when they fell to a 6-0 defeat.
Safiullah Khan bagged the most goals when he found the back of the net four times as Pakistan earned their first victory of the tournament with Jadid Khan and Adnan Farooq scoring the other goals. With the win, Pakistan will now take on hosts Sri Lanka – who beat Chinese Taipei 2-1 in the other match – to decide who will advance to the final rounds. Sri Lanka have six points from two matches while Pakistan, who earlier drew 1-1 with Chinese Taipei, have four points. The Group D winners will join Group C qualifiers Kyrgyzstan, defending champions India, Tajikistan and DPR Korea in the finals. Group A qualifiers, which starts on 26 April, features Myanmar, Cambodia, Bangladesh and either Macau or Mongolia. Group B comprises of Turkmenistan, Philippines, Bhutan and Maldives with the kick-off on 14 April. |
