SINGAPORE (3 Sept 2008) – Home United opened up a one point lead at the top of the S-League following the surprise defeat suffered by league leaders Singapore Armed Forces FC (SAFFC) at the hands of Albirex Niigata.
Home have collected 56 points from 18 wins, two draws and four defeats while SAFFC are on 55 points from 17 wins, four draws and three losses. Third are the Super Reds who have garnered 53 points from 17 wins, two draws and four defeats. In the match against Albirex, Shaiful Esah scored the opener for SAFFC in the eight minute before the home team fought back in the second half with goals off Tetsuya Okayama’s penalty in the 47th minute and then the winner from Ryota Doi in the 69th minute. “We were unbeaten for six matches before tonight and that upped our confidence and motivation,” said Hiroaki Hiraoka, the head coach for Albirex. “Though we did not begin particularly well, we came back and played above ourselves in thereafter by playing our usual attacking game. “Credit to everyone in the team especially the players, as everyone contributed to this win.” CURRENT S-LEAGUE STANDINGS 1.
