SINGAPORE (28 March 2016) – Grassroots football development continued to take centre stage in Singapore as more than 350 school children from various primary schools in the city-state gathered for the Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council (SPSSC)/Football Association of Singapore (FAS) U-10 Football Fiesta last week.
Julie Teo, General Manager for Grassroots and Women’s Football, FAS said: “We are very pleased to work with the Ministry of Education and the SPSSC to organise the first-ever U10 football fiesta in Singapore. It was also the first time that the teams were mixed – both boys and girls could participate together in fun drills and small-sided games in a schools event.”
Later in the week, young aspirants from the FAS Cubs centres were accompanied by parents as they participated in the Inter-Cubs Centres Games. Going beyond learning to play the beautiful game, the mini-tournament also provided the children with the opportunity to learn life skills, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, building positive character-building values while promoting family and community bonding.
“It was great to see boys and girls from our FAS Cubs centres come together for a day of small-sided games. Even the parents enjoyed themselves and were cheering and supporting their children on.
The FAS Cubs centres were launched in August last year and we aim to continue to organise such regular mini-matches for the Cubs children.”
There are currently five Cubs Programme centres in Singapore, with two all-girls training centres and three mixed centres for both boys and girls. The 35-week syllabus programme, which targets children from ages six to 12, is an integral part of the FAS vision to reach over 15,000 school children by 2020.
