HANOI (16 July 2011) – Vietnam chief coach Falko Goetz has included five new faces in preparation for the second round match of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Qatar.
Following what was seen as an unsatisfactory defensive performance in their first round match against Macau which Vietnam steamrolled 13-1 on aggregate, Goetz has included Olympic team keeper Nguyen Tuan Manh from Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC into the mix.
The other players who have made the Vietnam national squad are Tran Chi Cong, Nguyen Van Bien and Nguyen The Anh while midfielder Le Tan Tai is back after injuries.
Among those who were dropped from the squad are Duong Hong Son, who won a Golden Ball award for best goalkeeper in 2008 and midfielders Nguyen Nhu Thanh and Nguyen Vu Phong.
Vietnam will take on Qatar in the first leg tie on 23 July 2011 at the Al-Sadd Stadium in Doha City while the return match will be played at the My Dinh National Stadium on 28 July 2011.
The last time the two sides met was at the Asian Cup 2007 where hosts Vietnam held Qatar to a 1-1 draw.
