MANILA (12 March 2014) – A well-taken strike from Mark Hartmann ten minutes to the end handed Loyola Meralco Sparks their first defeat of the season in the United Football League (UFL) as Global FC strengthened their position in the top two.
In the match that was played at the Emperador Stadium, Global FC grabbed a first-half lead when Milad Behgandom slammed home late in the first half. They then doubled their lead when German Rodriguez headed in Hartmann’s cross right at the hour mark.
But Sparks were not about to just lie down and give up when Lee Joo Young blasted in the cross from Paolo Bugas as Phil Younghusband then converted a penalty five minutes later to put both teams on level terms.
However, Hartmann would have the last laugh in the game when he nailed the winner against his former club Sparks.
“We’ve made it possible for us to control our own destiny,” said Global head coach Leigh Manson. “We don’t need to rely on other teams, so for us, it was huge.”
In the meantime, Philippine Army-GTI edged Team Socceroo 2-1 with Ricardo Becite and John Cain finding the goals for Army as Stanley Ankrah scored for Team Socceroo right at the end.
