DECEMBER 20, 2006 (BANGKOK): The 37th King’s Cup next week will hold extra importance for competing teams where it is being used in the preparation for the Asean Football Championship in mid-January.
The King’s Cup which was won by Latvia last year will see the likes of host Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Kazakhstan battling it out for the honour of winning the crown which has its roots way back in 1968. The last time Thailand won the tournament was in 2000 while Vietnam, Singapore and Kazakhtsan had never lifted the crown before. For Thailand, the recent positive showing by the national Under-23 team at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar meant that several players will be incorporated into the full senior squad. Singapore will follow along the same route while for Vietnam; it is believed that they will be using an even mixture of players for the King’s Cup and the Asean Football Championship. But whatever the misgiving, there is no doubt that failure to perform at the King’s Cup meant a return to the drawing board although with time running a little short, not much changes can be expected. 37th KING’S CUP (All matches at the Suphachalasai Stadium) Dec 24: Singapore vs Kazakhstan/ Thailand vs Vietnam Final Dec 30: 1st vs 2nd |
