PHNOM PENH (7 March 2013) – After two losses in their last two friendly matches, Cambodia – under newly re-appointed chief coach Prak Sovannara – finally picked up their first win when they beat the Malaysian Under-23 squad 3-1 in a friendly that was played at the National Olympic Stadium last night.
The defeat for the Malaysian youngsters was their first after holding Myanmar to a scoreless draw in their first friendly in Yangon and then a 3-3 deadlock against Laos in Vientiane.
Cambodia were quicker on the ball as Khim Borey opened account in the 10th minute before taking a 2-0 lead at the half with another strike from Teab Vathanak in the 45th minute.
And even though the Malaysians did pull a goal back from A. Thamil Arasu 63rd minute, the Cambodians made sure of the win with the third strike five minutes to the end from Khoun Laboravy.
While the Malaysians are preparing for the SEA Games later in the year, the Cambodians are using the game to tune up for the AFC Challenge Cup on 22 March 2013 where they have been placed in Group E against Turkmenistan, Philippines and Brunei.
