PHNOM PENH (31 May 2012) – With current coach Lee Tae Hoon not expected to extend his two-year stint with the national team, the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) have indicated that they will be using local talent to lead the nation’s campaign for the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifying round this October in Myanmar.
Cambodia failed to qualify for the last AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010 when they completed the qualifying round on third behind Laos and the Philippines.
And with the change in the qualifiers this time round where the Philippines have gained an automatic place into the final rounds, their place in the qualifiers will be taken over by Myanmar. The other teams in the qualifiers are Laos, Brunei and Timor Leste.
“Looking ahead to the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers later this year, the national team would be entrusted to one of the local coaches. We have 10 A-licensed coaches in the country now. We are confident one of our own can fit in,” said May Tola.
Tae Hoon’s two-year contract with the FFC ends in July. Over the past 12 years, the FFC have used three other foreign coaches and they were Joachim Fickert, Scott O’Donnell and Yoo Keu Heung.
