HO CHI MINH CITY (3 May 2015) – A single firing shot from captain Kobie Ann Ferguson was the only thing that separated the Australian Under-20 team from Laos as the former scored their second win in as many matches in Group A of the AFF Women’s Championship here at the Thong Nhat Stadium.
The match was not pretty and even though Australia had put in mostly reserved players for the tie, they were still a handful which forced Laos with little choice but to play it defensive.
They might not have parked the bus all day long but they did enough to deter the physically stronger Australians from getting the lead in the first half as Princess Ibini-Isei and also Kally Ann Lewis were left frustrated.
Australia went on very much in the same vein as they had done in the first half and in the 57th minute, Princess sent a warning of what’s to come with a grounder that caught the whole Laotian defence napping but which saw no one making the right finish at the back post.
And three minutes later, Australia finally broke the deadlock when Ferguson rifled in a shot to the top left hand corner of the Laos goal that left keeper Bounyong Akkhavong stranded.
With the win, Australia are firmly in the driver’s seat in the group with the maximum six points from two matches with a place in the semi-finals already guaranteed.
