BACOLOD CITY (8 March, 2008) – Newly appointed Philippines national coach Norman Fegidero has sent a warning that national players need to be at the top of their game each time they don national colours.
Following from their recent 3-0 loss to Korean club side Ulsan Hyundai, Fegidero said that his disappointment stems not from the result of the match but rather from the attitude of the players. “It was so frustrating to watch our players terribly out of shape and failing to do what was ordinarily expected of them (as a footballer),” said Fegidero, whose claim to fame was scoring the 1-0 winner against Malaysia at the SEA Games in 1991. “We definitely will have a lot of things to do before we can even say we’re ready for the qualifiers of the AFC Challenge Cup.” The former coach of West Negros University said that he expects the national players to be more committed and inspired when they begin national training camp on 23 March in Bacolod City. Philippines have been placed in Group 2 of the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers against defending champions Tajikistan, Brunei and Bhutan. The qualifiers have been scheduled for 8-11 May, 2008 in Panaad – the venue of the 2005 SEA Games men’s football competition and also the qualifying round of the 2006 Asean Football Championship. |
