BANGKOK (28 Aug 2013) – The FA of Thailand (FAT) election is now scheduled for 7 October after the several parties agreed to come to terms with the number of eligible voters, which is 72.
Initially, the election was supposed to be held on 23 September.
“It now looks impossible that we could get things done within FIFA’s deadline but we’ll try to reach a compromise. I think they would agree on our request to move the deadline back for a few more weeks,” said incumbent Datuk Worawi Makudi.
This week, the several parties agreed on the number of eligible voters to 72 from more than 300, as suggested by FIFA. This agreement over the number of eligible voters was the main stumbling block to holding an FAT election.
“We accepted 72 as the number of clubs eligible to vote. It was the number stated in the amendments to the association’s regulations. We made some changes to the criteria in selecting those clubs from each competition,” said Virach Chanpanich, a candidate in the upcoming election.
“We maintain that the Thai Premier League and League One (the country’s second-tier league) have 18 clubs each plus the winners and runners-up from each of the three bottom rung leagues.”
