PETALING JAYA (21 April 2009) – In less than ten days that he was announced as the man to lead the Malaysia Under-23 squad to the SEA Games in Laos, K. Rajagobal has now been named as the new Malaysia national coach.
Rajagobal (pix) is also the head coach of the Harimau Muda team currently playing in the Malaysian Premier League. “I believe that the time is right for me to take over the national team,” said Rajagobal. Rajagobal, who has been offered a two year contract with another year option, has commented that he will make use of a majority of the players from the Under-23 squad for the senior side. He said that this is the only way to ensure that they get enough international exposure in preparation for the SEA Games in Laos in December. The first task for Rajagobal will be to prepare a squad for the exhibition match against Manchester United on 18 July while the first test for the Under-23 team would be the Inter-Continental Cup on 1-14 June. “The game against Manchester United will allow me to assess the players’ ability against players who are technically at a higher level. And I think it is an important arena to test the payers for the SEA Games and also for the Asian Cup 2011 qualifiers against Uzbekistan in November. In the meantime, Datuk Redzuan Sheikh Ahmad, the deputy president of the FAM announced that the senior team will be taking part in the Merdeka Tournament in August. |
