SINGAPORE (4 April 2010) – Frederick Mendy’s fifth goal of the season gave Etoile FC the chance to move up to second in the S-League following their 1-0 win over Balestier Khalsa in the match that was played at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
With both teams not giving any quarter, the only goal in the match came late in the 80th minute when Flavien Michelini struck the ball which came off Balestier defender Ishak Zainol only for Mendy to slam home from close range. And the goal could not have come at a more opportune moment for Etoile, considering that they had wasted a hatful of chances all night long. In the tenth minute of play, Mendy had only Balestier keeper Joey Sim to beat but he muffed his attempt while captain Vershave Matthias’ header just hit the crossbar. The win for Etoile was their third of the season where after seven matches, they have collected 13 points – four behind current league leaders Tampines Rovers. |
