JAKARTA (Oct 11, 2007) – The fight for just the eight available positions in the next round of the Indonesian League will be keen this year as the challenge unfolds after the Ramadhan break.
For the moment, there are no clear cut teams from either divisions of East and West which could claim their place in the last eight of the championship considering there are still some way to go yet to the end of the first stage of the league. In the Western division, Sriwijaya FC are at the top of the table after having collected 48 points from 25 matches with 14 wins, 6 draws and 5 defeats. Just a point behind are Persija Jakarta with 47 points from 27 games while third are Persib Bandung with 46 points from 25 games. On equal 43 points each are PSMS Medan and Persik Kediri while Persita Tangerang are on sixth with 40 points and Persela Lamongan on seventh with 39 points. In the Eastern division, Persipura Jayapura lead the standing with 43 points from 25 matches with 12 wins, 7 draws and 6 defeats. Persiwa Wamena are on second with 43 points from 25 matches – the same with Deltras Sidoarjo although the latter have played two matches more. The fourth ranked team currently are Persijap Jepara who have garnered 42 points from 26 games. But that is not to say that teams like PSM Makassar, who have been leading the first round of the league and who are currently fifth in the standing, do not stand a chance of making the last four from the group. Makassar, who have collected 40 points, have played a game less than current Eastern division leaders Persipura Jayapura with 43 points. And there’s still the chance that Arema Malang (39 points) and Persiter Ternate (38 points) might still make the cut especially when Persipura Jayapura still have to play four away matches against four home games to the finale. Their opponents are on the road are Persiwa Wamena, Arema Malang, Persekabpas Pasuruan, Persijap Japara and Persis Solo. WESTERN DIVISION 1. Sriwijaya FC 48 pts EASTERN DIVISION In the meantime, the match between the Indonesia U23 team and the U20 side of Quelmes from Argentina had to be called off due to heavy rain.
