BANGKOK (Oct 7, 2007) – Thailand’s Kiatisak Senamuang hung up his boots this week marking the end of an illustrious career.
The man who is fondly known as ‘Zico’ bid farewell to more than 15 years in the colours of Thailand in a testimonial match at the Stadium Supachalasai where Thailand draw 1-1 with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Playing only towards the final 25 minutes of the game, Kiatisak was instrumental in giving Thailand the lead when Pipat Tonkanya slot home from close range. But even though UAE equalised through Nawaf Mubarak Musabeh towards the end of the match to snuff out an outright celebration, still the Thai fans were in joyous mood nonetheless to celebrate the retirement of one of their favourite sons. Worawi Makudi, the president of the FA of Thailand (FAT) was full of praise for the long-serving Thai striker. “’We wanted him to continue playing for the national team but he decided to quit and we respect his decision,” said Worawi. “He is a fine example to young footballers. He was very consistent and played in a sporting manner throughout his career.” Responded Kiatisak: “I would like to thank the FA of Thailand for giving me the opportunity for an upcountry boy from Khon Kaen to play for the national team. “I have enjoyed my career to the full. Football has taken me to many countries and it has been a great experience. I hope that one day, I will be able to coach the Thai national team,” he added. Kiatisak spent a year with English side Huddersfield Town and where towards the end of his career, he played his football in the V-League.
