KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 27, 2008) – Argentina, the first foreign team to arrive here for the prestigious KL World 5s futsal tournament, are all set to dazzle fans in Malaysia when the event is staged at the historic Stadium Negara from Jan 29 to Feb 3.
The KL World 5’s, the most lucrative futsal tournament in the world with a prize purse of USD150,000, is organised by ESPN STAR Sports, Asia’s No. 1 sports broadcaster. Argentina, the winners the last time the competition was hosted here, landed at the KLIA in the morning and insisted on training this afternoon. Clearly wanting to make full use of every day they have before the kick-off on Friday, the Argentines had a full blown session. Those at the stadium, including the Malaysians and the media were dazzled by their skilful display. Malaysia, Australia and Argentina tested out the playing conditions at the Stadium Negara today. Drawn in Group A with hosts Malaysia, England, Indonesia and Australia, Argentina are the hot favourites along with their fellow South American neighbours, Brazil. As the two teams are in different groups, there is a possibility the giants clashing in the final. In the KL event in 2003, Argentina edged Brazil for the title. The Brazilians head into the KL World 5s with a glittering record that includes three FIFA Futsal World Champion titles. They also have 12 South American Futsal titles and are three-time winners of the Grand Prix de Futsal. Most teams will be intimidated as soon as they step onto court with the Brazilians, but certainly not for archrivals Argentina, who will be determined to claim the KL World 5s crown. While Brazil may appear to hold the edge, battles between the two have always been close and hard-fought. Another classic thriller is on the cards for the KL world 5s as the best teams and players bring the action right to our doorstep.
